Where to Cool Off On Hot Days

Summer temperatures in this part of the Breede River Valley can get quite hot, often reaching well into the high 30s°C (90s°F). Fortunately, there are a few spots where you can cool off in the region’s rivers and natural pools. Remember, you cannot simply swim anywhere in a river where you have access to the water, These rivers run through private farmland and we need to respect the private property of our local community.

Mount Bain Reserve Swimming Hole

The Mount Bain reserve has a designated swimming area in the Witte River near Calabash Bush Pub. The swimming hole is a large pool in the river and it’s a great spot to cool off and just relax in the water. Here’s how to get to the swimming hole and remember to take the floaties.

Swimming in Bainskloof Pass

Many of the hiking trails in Limietberg Nature Reserve, including those starting in Bainskloof Pass, lead to refreshing mountain streams and secluded rock pools perfect for a mid-hike dip.

  • Tweede Tol in Limietberg Nature Reserve has a well-maintained picnic site with easy access to a large, shaded swimming hole, ideal for families and day visitors (entry requires a CapeNature permit).
  • The Witte River features several pools along its route, particularly accessible via the Rockhopper Trail, which starts at Eerste Tol.
  • Meanwhile, the Bobbejaans River swimming area is reached via the Bobbejaans River Trail, a moderate hike through fynbos-covered slopes leading to clear, cool mountain pools.

All three spots provide a welcome escape from the summer heat, but visitors should always check water levels and conditions before swimming, especially after heavy rains. For more information on how to access these trails and where to obtain permits, go to our hiking information page.
